DEAR BLEACHING NIGERIANS - Read Lupita Nyongo'o's Moving Speech At The Essence Luncheon

This is a must read for every Nigerian especially every lady who has ever felt inferior due to her dark skin and for those who want to be light at all cost. This is a reminder that Black is Beautiful.
Lupita who was at Essence Magazine’s seventh annual Women in Hollywood luncheon where Oprah Winfrey ,Kerry Washington, Brandy and the cream of Hollywood were present gave this moving speech on black beauty.

I wrote down this speech that I had no time to practice so this will be the practicing session.Thank you Alfre, for such an amazing, amazing introduction and celebration of my work. And thank you very much for inviting me to be a part of such an extraordinary community.
I am surrounded by people who have inspired me, women in particular whose presence on screen made me feel a little more seen and heard and understood. That it is ESSENCE that holds this event celebrating our professional gains of the year is significant, a beauty magazine that recognizes the beauty that we not just possess but also produce.
I want to take this opportunity to talk about beauty, Black beauty, dark beauty. I received a letter from a girl and I’d like to share just a small part of it with you: “Dear Lupita,” it reads, “I think you’re really lucky to be this Black but yet this successful in Hollywood overnight. I was just about to buy Dencia’s Whitenicious cream to lighten my skin when you appeared on the world map and saved me.”
My heart bled a little when I read those words, I could never have guessed that my first job out of school would be so powerful in and of itself and that it would propel me to be such an image of hope in the same way that the women of The Color Purple were to me.
I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful. I put on the TV and only saw pale skin, I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter-skinned. The morning would come and I would be so excited about seeing my new skin that I would refuse to look down at myself until I was in front of a mirror because I wanted to see my fair face first.
And every day I experienced the same disappointment of being just as dark as I was the day before. I tried to negotiate with God, I told him I would stop stealing sugar cubes at night if he gave me what I wanted, I would listen to my mother’s every word and never lose my school sweater again if he just made me a little lighter. But I guess God was unimpressed with my bargaining chips because He never listened.
And when I was a teenager my self-hate grew worse, as you can imagine happens with adolescence. My mother reminded me often that she thought that I was beautiful but that was no conservation, she’s my mother, of course she’s supposed to think I am beautiful. And then…Alek Wek. A celebrated model, she was dark as night, she was on all of the runways and in every magazine and everyone was talking about how beautiful she was. Even Oprah called her beautiful and that made it a fact. I couldn’t believe that people were embracing a woman who looked so much like me, as beautiful.
My complexion had always been an obstacle to overcome and all of a sudden Oprah was telling me it wasn’t. It was perplexing and I wanted to reject it because I had begun to enjoy the seduction of inadequacy. But a flower couldn’t help but bloom inside of me, when I saw Alek I inadvertently saw a reflection of myself that I could not deny.
Now, I had a spring in my step because I felt more seen, more appreciated by the far away gatekeepers of beauty. But around me the preference for my skin prevailed, to the courters that I thought mattered I was still unbeautiful.
And my mother again would say to me you can’t eat beauty, it doesn’t feed you and these words plagued and bothered me; I didn’t really understand them until finally I realized that beauty was not a thing that I could acquire or consume, it was something that I just had to be.
And what my mother meant when she said you can’t eat beauty was that you can’t rely on how you look to sustain you. What is fundamentally beautiful is compassion for yourself and for those around you. That kind of beauty enflames the heart and enchants the soul. It is what got Patsey in so much trouble with her master, but it is also what has kept her story alive to this day. We remember the beauty of her spirit even after the beauty of her body has faded away.
And so I hope that my presence on your screens and in the magazines may lead you, young girl, on a similar journey. That you will feel the validation of your external beauty but also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside.
There is no shame in Black beauty.

'I Made The Most Terrible Mistake Ever, How Do I Win Back His Love'

I am a married young woman of 29, blessed with a set of twinsboy and girl. I am confused because I have made a terrible mistake that I do not even know what to do or how to redeem myself esteem and my relationship.

How can I make things right again I do not know, really. You might say what you like about me but I need your help, please.  I believe that any sin committed or realised been committed, the best way as Almighty said is to confess and get away from it. I have confessed mine but things went wrong and out of hand. It was just one good and bad night that I slept with a family friend and who also was a former colleague. This action has put me in a serious mess as I cannot get on with my husband just like we used to before.

How it all happened, it was short but a little bit long story.
This man admired me a lot when we were working together but I never give a damn. He is also a friend to my husband; they met abroad when he quit his job here, the office I am working. We attended a get-together farewell party together and this man with other friends were all there since they all come from abroad together for holiday and celebrations. I chatted and drank with them. I did not know how it happened but I am very sure that they spiked my drink. I cannot proof this but it happened that I found myself inside this good for nothing man’s car.

He was forcing me to wake up saying ‘get up and arrange yourself.’  As I tried to rise up my head I remember him saying ‘get out quick before ….. (he mentioned my husband’s name) will come to look for us.’ I got out and we walked back to the gathering. But I was not myself as I felt nausea. Getting back home in the second day I tried to put things together in my mind. So I remembered that I felt dizzy and he offered to walk me around to clear my head. I thought over this many times and soliloquized about it like one rehearsing a part in a drama on its own. Throughout the day I did not get myself, I felt a huge slap on my back and a sharp pain in my heart.

My husband traveled back at the wee hour of the second day. But because of the love he has for me I cannot take it any longer because I thought that the only way I will be able to live with this is to let my husband know what went wrong that good but devilish night. I summoned courage at the fourth day when he has got to his base, with pain in my heart, and explained everything to him. He was very hurt, angry and full of disappointment in both of us (the friend, myself) and I will say especially me, without thinking of the circumstances surrounding it. Since I explained to him he never spoke with me but always sent an offline message to ask about our children.

Last month he came back without telling me that he is coming and now that he is around I tried to found out if he discusses this with anyone but it is proving very difficult for me to know. Though, none of his friends or other family members acted strangely to me. But I saw it written in his diary that “…traveling home on… to my family to solidify my marriage, I love my family and I want the best for my children.” With this I believed that he came back to make the marriage work in spite of all he said to me on the phone when I explained to him.

I know he still loves me like I am badly crazy about him, too.  Since he came we did not say or discuss anything about the incident. But it is just difficult for us I will say to be overly on each other like before the incident. Again, I think he is watching me because he is suspicious of everything about me like what I do, where I go, who I chat with, my friend and even when I finish cooking and dishing, I swear with style he want me to taste it first! This is making me uncomfortable and jittering in everything I am doing whenever he is around at home.
Do you think things will ever be the same again?

I Charge N1m To Write A Song – Harrysong

The 'Beta Pikin' crooner who is signed to Kcee's 5 star music has joined the league of big boys making big cash and opened up in this recent interview with Punch.

On Song Writing
“Before now we (songwriters) charged between N100, 000 and N2000, 000 for a song. Today I charge as much as 1million to write a song. Truth is, Nigerian artistes have begun to appreciate songwriters. They pay me my money and appreciate me. I have written a lot of songs but I don’t talk about them because Nigerian artistes don’t like it when the songwriters take credit for compising songs for them.”
On his 'Mandela' tribute song to the Late Nelson Mandela
“The proceeds from the caller-back tune is actually worth more than N50m. Truth is, I was paid a lot of money;  you know -  when they say money that can change someone’s life. That’s the value of what I received .
“I can’t reveal the exact amount because we work as a team. So, all the money realised is shared among us. You just want to forget all the years of suffering. It’s not a mere hype because the money is there. The song is everywhere. You go to South-Africa , the girls are crazy about it.”

SHOCK In Ondo As Man Pulls Sleeping Baby From Back Of Mother, Smashes Him On Concrete Floor

DETECTIVES in Ondo State have arrested a middle-aged man, Ayelehin Kehinde, for allegedly causing the death of a two-year-old toddler in Supare, Akoko area of the state during a free-for-all.

The suspect, who is now in police custody, reportedly pulled the baby boy, who was sleeping, from the back of her mother and smashed him on the concrete floor.
Vanguard gathered that the mother of the deceased boy was accused by the suspect of giving out  information about him to police detectives who recently raided his house.
It was learnt that some detectives stormed the area recently asking questions concerning complaints from some leaders in the area over the activities of some people with questionable character.
Vanguard learnt that someone may have leaked the information to the suspect that his name was mentioned to the detectives who visited the area.
Irked by this information, the suspect was said to have stormed the woman’s residence  and accused her of giving false information about him to the police.
An argument reportedly ensued which later degenerated to a free-for-all and in annoyance, the suspect was said to have pulled the baby backed by her mother and hit  him on the concrete floor.
The baby’s head was reportedly smashed with blood gushing out  from the nose, ears  and mouth.
The suspect was said to have attempted to flee but was overpowered by the neighbours who took him to the police station where he was  detained.
Neighbours, however, rushed the baby to the hospital but he reportedly died on the way and was confirmed dead in the hospital.
Contacted, the Police image maker, Wole Ogodo, who confirmed the incident and the arrest of the suspect described the incident as “cruel.”

Man Dies After Sex Romp With Prostitute In Aba

A man, identified as Ogadinma Chukwu, has lost his life while having sex with a commercial sex worker at a popular brothel located on St. Michael’s Road, Aba, Abia State, Vanguard reports.
Sources said the deceased, whom they alleged to be a regular visitor to the brothel, died while romping the prostitute.

It was gathered that immediately Chukwu slumped and died, the prostitute contacted her colleagues and the manager of the brothel who moved his corpse to a sanitary lane at the back of the brothel.
As a result of the development, shop owners around the area quickly closed business for fear of police arrest.
Those who spoke anonymously to our reporter disclosed that some staff of the brothel at about 5 p.m. brought out the corpse through their back door, dropped it at the sanitary lane and disappeared.
When our correspondent visited the area, the brothel was deserted as people were gathering at the adjoining St. Michael’s Road by York Street junction and Hospital Road.
A cross section of sympathisers said the deceased might have died of a cardiac arrest or exhaustion as white foam gushed out of his mouth.
Policemen from the Aba Central Police Station, who conducted a search at the scene, recovered an ATM card, a cheque book, cash of over N200,000 and a Man O’ War Association of Nigeria identity card, bearing the name, Ogadinma Chukwu.
Contacted, the Commander, Man O’ War Association, Aba, Uche Egbuziem, identified Ogadinma Chukwu as a former member of the association, stressing that the deceased and some other members of the group still use their old identity cards.
Abia Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, ASP Geoffrey Ogbonna, could not be reached for comments at press time, but a senior police officer said the corpse had been deposited in a mortuary.
He said an autopsy would be conducted to determine the cause of the man’s death.

Gani Fawehinmi’s Family Rejects Centenary Award For These FOUR Reasons

“Would our father have accepted it, certainly NO”: Gani Fawehinmi’s family rejects Centenary Award for four reasons.

The family of late legal titan, Gani Fawehinmi, has turned down the centenary award which was to be bestowed on their father on Friday by President Goodluck Jonathan.

In a letter dated February 27, 2014, signed by the eldest son of the late lawyer, Mohammed Fawehinmi and addressed to the Secretary to the Federal Government of Nigeria, Anyim Pius Anyim, the family listed four reasons why it had to turn down the honour.

Here’s the letter which was addressed to the SGF:

Dear Sir,

RE: CENTENARY AWARD TO OUR LATE FATHER, CHIEF GANI FAWEHINMI (SAN)

We acknowledge the receipt of your letter, dated February 24, 2014, which was routed through Mr Tony Akiotu, Group Managing Director, DAAR Communications, Abuja, wherein our late father, Chief Gani Fawehinmi(SAN) was chosen as one of the awardees of the Centenary celebrations of Nigeria by President Goodluck Jonathan. We want thank the Federal Government for considering our late father for this HONOUR.

However, for reasons stated here under, our family has decided it would be inexpedient to accept the award:

1. In the list of the awardees published by the Federal Government, was the name of former military dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida, who as military president, severally detained and tortured our late father. In the course of one of such illegal and inhuman detentions, our late father’s cell was sprayed with toxic substances while in Gashua prison in 1987. The cumulative effect of that dastardly action led to our father, a non- smoker, contracting lung cancer which eventually led to his death on September 5, 2009. We therefore, find it morally incongruous and psychologically debilitating for our family to stand on the same podium with General Babangida to receive awards.

2. Our late father was empathetic to the sufferings of our people, particularly students. In the last 72 hours, 59 innocent students were mowed down by the blood-thirsty Boko Haram terrorists in Yobe state, while 20 other girls were similarly abducted by these same band of terrorists. These girls are still in captivity while their fate is unknown. If our late father were to be alive, would he be wining and dining with all the glitterati at a Centenary celebration under these circumstances? Certainly no.

3. In the past few weeks, the polity has been assaulted with putrid odour of corruption with the alleged $20 billion missing in NNPC, a development that became the Archilles heel of Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the suspended Governor of Central Bank. As an anti-corruption activist, if he were to be alive, our late father would have confronted the issue head-long and possibly gone to court. With the issue still raging, would our late father have accepted this award at this critical moment? Certainly no.

4. Our late father was unrepentantly for the UNITY of Nigeria. However, with the level of profligacy in some of the events celebrating NIGERIA’S Centenary, our late father would have preferred these multi- million Naira expenditures channeled to our decrepit Teaching hospitals, than unproductive razzmatazz that do not improve the socio-Economic well being of our people.

Sir, for these reasons, our family respectfully declines to receive the award about to be conferred on our late father by the government. Please, accept the assurances of our highest consideration.

Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria.

(Signed)

MOHAMMED FAWEHINMI, ESQ.

Lagos Theatre Festival: Four Plays, Fringe Shows and Exhibitions

This weekend ( Feb 28 - March 2nd). Lagos Theatre Festival is here. Have you bought your tickets? Four Plays, Fringe Shows and Exhibitions. Freedom Park, Lagos Island.Queen of the Night ( 3.15pm & 6.15pm)

There is a bar in Lagos where there is no good or bad; where all pretenses at right and wrong stop at the door. This place is known as the “Queen of the Night”.

However, the policeman, Kamal, accompanied by his side-kick, Pabina, decides he has had enough of the night-spot’s famed neutrality & enters in pursuit of the fugitive, G.C. & his sister, Sheri. Continue

However they must contend with the laws of the bar itself and its owner, the Queen.
... And it seems there is a price to pay for disobedience.

Make We Waka ( 2pm4pm6pm)
Beyond the park's walls, Lagos city crackles with life. Stories abound; some told, some hidden and some forgotten. Lagos punctures the very air we breathe; but here we ask you to stop, to look, to listen to what the city might have to tell you. Make we waka...

Diagnosis ( 2.15pm & 5.15pm)

Johnnie and Dan are good friends who have gone through hell and high water to escape the realities of Lagos living. They decide to pull off internet scams on innocent victims. Finally, they strike a chord with an Adeline McCulloch from Canada who agrees to fund their imaginary NGO scheme.
Things take a rather unexpected turn when Johnnie’s girlfriend gets in the mix. It gets further complicated as other elements that quite frankly, have no business interfering in this emerging deal!!!

Waiting for a lottery ( 3pm & 5pm)
Lotteries, like auditions, have provided gateways to success and stardom in Lagos - a dreamland surrounded by the waters of survival, dreams and ambitions.  Waiting for a Lottery is a fraudulent reality of one’s struggle for the Golden Fleece borne by the adage of the donkey and the carrot. The play mirrors the opportunities that create the platforms for mediocrity.
Hurry buy your tickets.
Tickets cost 2500 Naira
