Nigeria’s Anti-Same Sex Marriage Law Will Fuel Violence - Ban Ki-Moon

United Nation’s Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed fears that President Jonathan’s recent signing of the anti-same sex marriage law which criminalizes gay marriage, same-sex “amorous relationships” and membership of gay rights groups in Nigeria may fuel prejudice and violence in the country.

Ban expressed this fear in a statement released by his press office which said “The Secretary-General fears that the law may fuel prejudice and violence, and notes with alarm reports that police in northern Nigeria have arrested individuals believed by the authorities to be homosexuals, and may even have tortured them.”
He said “As UNAIDS and the Global Fund noted in a statement yesterday, the law also risks obstructing effective responses to HIV/AIDS.”
